Cobh Tourism reports '....2012 sees the centenary of the Titanic's only voyage and we will be welcoming this special New Year with an acknowledgment on New Year's Day.
To pay tribute to one of the biggest maritime events in the last 100 years, The Irish Navy will berth the LE Emer at the Deep Water Quay, outside the Cobh Heritage Centre and it will be open to the public from 2 pm to 4 pm. This will be followed by a message from the Cobh Town Mayor and other dignitaries and a poignant gun salute exchange from Spike Island and the LE Emer. At 5.30pm we will remember the people associated with the TItanic by releasing 123 flares from Spike Island, this number representing the people that boarded the Titanic from Cobh on the 11th of April 1912.
