A taste of Summer....Fota Wildlife Park

 

Summer just wouldn't be Summer without a visit to Fota Wildlife Park. The main attractions are, undoubtedly, the cheetahs, the giraffes, and the gibbons but their is just so much more! Zebra, bison, spider monkeys, kangaroos, penguins, the list just goes on and on..... Have a look at this section of Fota Wildlife Park's website to get some appreciation of the variety Animals and Plants. The great thing about Fota is that all the animals are roaming relatively free and as you wander through the meandering pathways that snake through the animal pastures you feel intensely close to nature. Its a great place for all the family to visit!!!

Cobh is an ideal base to visit Fota. We're just 10 minutes away by car on another of Cork Harbour's islands....the Great Island! However, why go by car when you can go by train. Again Fota is only about 10 minutes away by train. Its the 3rd stop on the Cobh to Cork train (....some would say the Cobh to Dublin train). The train railway track hugs the shoreline of Great Island and then crosses by causeway and bridge to Fota Island. On your journey you're treated to some magnificent views of Cork Harbour - one of the World's largest natural harbours!

St. Patrick's Day Parade - the aftermath

Well done to all the volunteers who did much of the behind the scenes work to make this year's (and every year's) St. Patrick's Day parade possible. Pictured above were some of the 'See You in Cobh' committee helping to stack the street barriers away.

'See You in Cobh' organise the parade and spend many weeks putting the event together. Well done lads!!!

On the day itself not only do members of the committee act as MC's on the viewing stand but many others help in stewarding the crowds or manning & policing the car park entrances and exits.

It was only when all the work was done that the lads took a well deserved break (and a bag of chips from the local chipper)!!!

St. Colman's Cathedral Illumination

One of Cobh's most iconic structure's, St. Colman's Cathedral, was illuminated once more last night. Well done to the hard working 'See you in Cobh' committee who have worked hard and fundraised over the last few years to make this possible.

Cobh Cathedral can be seen for many miles at sea by ships approaching Cork Harbour. Indeed, for many emigrants it was their last abiding memory of Ireland as they left these shores. Now that view will also be quite apparent at night. Well done all!!!

Titanic100-Cobh2012 Commemoration

NEW YEARS DAY - Sunday 1st January 2012
Come and join the people of Cobh and help start the first in a series of public events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the RMS Titanic's Maiden Visit to Cobh (then Queenstown).
When in Cobh - Pay a visit to the Commodore Hotel - a hotel that was actually there at the time! In fact, some of the Irish passengers stayed in the hotel, the night prior to departure.

Iarnrod Eireann is offering its normal Sunday commuter train service from Cork's Kent Station to Cobh and return, (12 Cork-Cobh services in each direction), on New Years Day, Sunday 1st January 2012 to everyone wishing to travel to Cobh and take part in the first event planned by Titanic100-Cobh 2012.

Rail Fares are available for individuals, students and children with Kid+ Family Rail Tickets costing just €16.10 return from Cork to Cobh for any two adults and up to four children (under 16 years of age) travelling together. Titanic100-Cobh 2012 have arranged with the Irish Defence Forces - Naval Services, a tribute to one of the biggest maritime events in the last 100 years. The "Le Emer" will be berthed at the Port of Cork's Cobh's Cruise Terminal, which is located right next to Cobh Railway Station and Cobh Heritage Centre (5 mins walk to Commodore Hotel) and it will be open to the public from 2pm until 4pm on Sunday 1st January 2012 - New Years Day.

This will be followed at 4.30pm by a message from The Mayor of Cobh Town and other dignitaries in the Promenade Band Stand and a poignant gun salute exchange from Spike Island and the Le Emer.

People associated with the Titanic will be remembered with the release of 123 flares from Spike Island, representing the number of people who boarded The Titanic from Cobh on 11th April 1912.

This is an ideal opportunity for the whole family to come to Cobh, experience firsthand the inside of an Irish Navy vessel and acknowledge the start of the commemoration of the RMS Titanic's Centenary year.
