Plenty to do.....

There is always plenty to do in Cobh during August and this year is no exception. Coming up shortly is the Cobh People's Regatta and for many people this is the highlight of the summer season. Over the
course of this weekend there are plenty of yacht races, rowing races, children's activities, live bands, and other entertainment....its positively a fun packed couple of days. Of course the weekend culminates in the much anticipated fireworks display. This year the Regatta is being held from Friday 16th August to Sunday 24th August.

The following weekend sees the start of the Verolme Cork Dockyard Gathering. The Dockyard closed in 1984 and was the only facility of its kind in Ireland outside of Harland & Wolfe in Belfast. Shipbuilding began in the yard in 1853 and continued right upto its closure. At one stage the yard employed over 1,100 workers. Many of the Irish Navy's ships were built at the yard. Over the course of the gathering weekend many of it former workers will get the chance to visit the yard once more. The yard will be open for public tours and there will be specially hosted seminars in the Commodore Hotel.
Commemorative ceremonies will also be held on the Sunday. The Irish Naval vessel, LE Aisling will dock at the Deep Water Quay and will be open to the public.

On the last weekend in August the Gorgeous Gael gathering will take place. This will be a celebration of the life and times of boxer, movie start, and singer, Jack Doyle who was born in Cobh on 31st
August 1913, 100 years previously. This weekend will feature a boxing tournament, showing of Jack's film, workshops featuring memorabilia of Jack's life, walking tours to Jack's home, commemorative ceremonies and much more....

....of course there is always other things to do and see in Cobh each day. If you are planning a break to Cobh you could always include a visit to Spike Island. Spike, located in the middle of Cork Harbour just one mile directly in front of Cobh, has a fascinating history. Now special guided tours give you a unique insight into this history. Spike, dubbed as Ireland's 'Alcatraz,' has served as a monastery, a fort, a prison, and a penal colony.
Boat trips and Island tours depart from Kennedy Pier daily every hour from 11am till 3pm with the latest return at 5:15pm. For the combined tour prices are €14.50 for Adults; €9.50 per Child; and €40 per family. Reduced prices for Boat trips only are also available. For further information check out Spike Island.

....another must is a visit to Fota Wildlife Park, especially if you have some younger folk in tow. This year Fota Wildlife Park is celebrating its 30th anniversary and is hosting many special celebratory Fota Wildlife Park is only 10 minutes from Cobh by rail or by road. However, to add to your adventure the rail journey is highly recommended. The spectacular views of Cork Harbour offered as the train makes its way from Cobh are not accessible by road!
events on a daily basis. Fota has been regularly voted as one of Ireland's top attractions and its easy to see why this is the case. Where else can you wander around with spectacular wild animals roaming freely and is such close proximity. Fota is widely known for its successful cheetah breeding programme and the cheetah pen is a special treat.

....and what about Cobh Road Train. A great way to spend a leisurely hour meandering around the Cobh Road Train.

....its going to be hot, hot, hot!!!

Well other than Tuesday, the weather has been relatively warm and sunny for awhile now. Last weekend temperatures got upto 25c.

This weekend they are set to get hotter, with many weather sites predicting a mini-heatwave of sorts. Temperatures may get upto 27c or 28c. This good weather is forecast to last upto midweek and may be longer.

With this good weather now's the ideal time to take a break away....and for a short break in Ireland, there is nowhere more ideal than Cobh, Co. Cork. Located on the shores of Cork Harbour, only 10 minutes train ride from Fota Wildlife Park, and ideally located in East Cork to visit nearby attractions, beaches, etc., Cobh is a great place to spend a few days.

Aswell, this Sunday is Australia Day as Cobh pulls out all the stops to welcome the passengers and crew of the cruise liner Sea Princess. Over 2,000 passengers have been onboard since this liner left Sydney Harbour on a World Cruise. This cruise takes place every two years and this is now the 3rd Australia Day to welcome the liner to Cobh.

If you'd fancy a few days in Cobh over this hot spell check out our Special Offers!!!

Family Fun at Fota Wildlife Park - a wild day out!!!

We're so close to Fota Wildlife Park that using Cobh as a base for a visit makes sense! Fota Wildlife Park is one of Ireland's top visitor attractions and for good reason. The following extract from the Park's website explains all:

'Fota Wildlife Park is set on 70 acres on the scenic Fota Island in the heart of Cork Harbour, less than 10 minutes from Cobh. The Park is a unique place where you can come face to face with free roaming animals & birds from all parts of the World. So whether it's a Kangaroo that hops in front of you or a Ring Tailed Lemur which jumps down from a tree, each visit is sure to bring its own fantastic memories.

In addition to the wonderful array of free roaming animals, visitors also have the opportunity to see highly endangered species such as the Rothschild Giraffe, European Bison, Lion Tailed Macaque and Scimitar Horned Oryx, most of them without the obstacle of fenced-in exhibits. This is the most spectacular aspect of Fota Wildlife Park, and is the reason you'll want to spend a full day exploring Ireland's Wildest Attraction.'

One of Fota's favourite attractions is the Cheetah run. Cheetah runs exist in very few Parks or Zoos worldwide and its great to be able to see Cheetah's up so close and personal. This is one of the unique aspects of a visit to Fota and is one of the reasons the Park is so popular.

So if you fancy a visit to Fota this summer why not stay in Cobh! We're just 10 minutes away by car on another of Cork Harbour's islands....the Great Island! However, why go by car when you can go by train. Again Fota is only about 10 minutes away by train. Its the 3rd stop on the Cobh to Cork train (....some would say the Cobh to Dublin train). The train railway track hugs the shoreline of Great Island and then crosses by causeway and bridge to Fota Island. On your journey you're treated to some magnificent views of Cork Harbour - one of the World's largest natural harbours!

We're offering special packages for Summer stays in Cobh. While staying at the Commodore Hotel we can offer you discounted vouchers for visits to Fota Wildlife Park. For more details have a look at our Special Offers.

A taste of Summer....Fota Wildlife Park

Summer just wouldn't be Summer without a visit to Fota Wildlife Park. The main attractions are, undoubtedly, the cheetahs, the giraffes, and the gibbons but their is just so much more! Zebra, bison, spider monkeys, kangaroos, penguins, the list just goes on and on..... Have a look at this section of Fota Wildlife Park's website to get some appreciation of the variety Animals and Plants. The great thing about Fota is that all the animals are roaming relatively free and as you wander through the meandering pathways that snake through the animal pastures you feel intensely close to nature. Its a great place for all the family to visit!!!

Cobh is an ideal base to visit Fota.
